Please join us for this community-wide tradition as we celebrate the accomplishments of our graduates. May 2026 Commencement will be split into two ceremonies to accommodate large crowd sizes.

ÿÈÕ´óÈüÈë¿Ú’s May 2026 Commencement will take place on Saturday, May 9 in Kimmel Arena with two ceremonies, the first for the College of Natural and Human Sciences at 10 a.m., and the second for the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences at 2 p.m.

All graduates and guests are encouraged to follow ÿÈÕ´óÈüÈë¿Ú’s Community Expectations. Disruptions of any kind will not be tolerated during this celebration. Anyone causing a disruption will be asked to leave immediately and escorted from the building without exceptions.

Pre-Commencement Celebrations

University Honors and Departmental Distinctions CelebrationÌý
Departmental Distinctions will be announced, and Latin Honors recipients will receive their cords at this ceremony. Students who will receive University Honors and Departmental Distinctions will be emailed an invitation to attend this ceremony.

Veteran Student and Active Military Graduation CeremonyÌý
Graduating veterans may choose to be recognized and receive a red, white, and blue cord at this ceremony. These cords signify the University’s appreciation for our military and veteran students, and their service and sacrifice. If you are a graduating veteran student interested in participating in this tradition, please emailÌýtransition@unca.edu.

First Generation College Student CelebrationÌý
First Generation College Students: bring your supporters and get ready to celebrate all your hard work! Graduates will receive a cord signifying their status as the first in their family to graduate with a 4-year degree. Graduates must register for this ceremony. Please email Abby Genter atÌýagenter@unca.eduÌýfor details.

Cap and Gown Pick Up

Attend Cap and Gown Day onÌýThursday, April 9, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Blue Ridge Room of Highsmith Student Union, to pick up your cap and gown and celebrate with fellow graduates. If you are not able to attend Cap and Gown Day, you can still pick up your commencement attire from the Bookstore, located on the ground floor of Highsmith Student Union, before May 8 during business hours (Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.- 4 p.m.). Inclusive sizing is available.

Guest Tickets

All graduating students will receiveÌý10 Guest TicketsÌýfor December Commencement. Everyone entering the arena (except graduating students and infants who will remain seated on another guest’s lap) will need a Guest Ticket.

Tickets that were not retrieved at Cap and Gown Day can be picked up from the Guest Services Desk at Highsmith Student Union from April 10 to May 8. If you do not pick up your tickets by May 8, you will then need to retrieve them from the Kimmel Arena Box Office on the morning of May 9, starting at 8 a.m.

Instructions for Commencement Day

Graduates should arrive at the Student Recreation Center one hour before their ceremony begins with their cap and gown, ready to line up for the Commencement procession. There will be reserved parking for all graduates in the upper P9 and P12 lots. Graduates should enter campus via Campus Drive and will need to display their cap in their windshield to be directed to the designated graduate parking areas.

Backpacks are not permitted at the Commencement Ceremony.ÌýSee the Clear Bag Policy and list of prohibited items below. There will not be a bag check, and only clear bags will be allowed. Water will be provided to all guests free of charge.

ÿÈÕ´óÈüÈë¿Ú is committed to providing universal access to all of our events. If you have any questions about access, or to request reasonable accommodations that will facilitate your full participation in Commencement, such as ASL interpreting or captioning, please complete this by Friday, April 24. If you have any questions or concerns, contact Heather L. Lindkvist, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Institutional Integrity and Access, at oiia@unca.edu.

Advance notice is necessary to arrange for accessibility needs. Please submit your request as soon as possible. We will attempt to implement late requests, but we cannot guarantee they will be met.

Guest Seating & Security

ÿÈÕ´óÈüÈë¿Ú has a Clear Bag Policy. We are not able to store personal items on site and guests should make arrangementsÌýto secure items prior to arriving on campus.Ìý Exceptions to the Clear Bag Policy are subject to search and include the following:

  • Medical bags
  • Diaper bags
  • Camera bags
  • Wallets and small clutches should be no larger than 4.5 in x 6.5 in

Prohibited Items Include:Ìý

  • Backpacks
  • Food or beveragesÌý(except for in medical bags)
  • Alcohol
  • Animals (Except Service Animals)
  • Tobacco Items
  • Weapons
  • Selfie Sticks, Tripods, and Noise-Making Devices
  • Umbrellas (collapsible umbrellas will be permitted)

Shuttles

Shuttles will be available before each ceremony and will run again after each ceremony. Shuttle stops are located throughout campus and will drop guests at the Kimmel Arena. PleaseÌýÌýfor shuttle stop locations.

Guest Arrival & Parking

Parking will be available in most campus parking lots (upper P9 and P12 parking lots will be reserved for graduates).

Attendants will direct guests to available parking, and shuttles will circulate throughout campus parking lots.

We ask that vehicles carrying guests with mobility needs park in the accessible parking lots, P12 and lower P9 (any attendant can direct you to these parking lots).

Transcripts are provided to ÿÈÕ´óÈüÈë¿Ú graduates at no charge from the University in person or online, with a small processing charge from the National Student Clearinghouse.
